Haeinyo: The Natural Essence of Joseon White Porcelain

Led by ceramic artist Kim Sang-in, Haeinyo (해인요) offers a contemporary reinterpretation of Joseon white porcelain (Baekja).

At the heart of Haeinyo’s work is Seolbaek (설백) — a soft, natural snow-white hue. To achieve this unpretentious purity and tactile texture, the studio hand-purifies kaolin clay sourced from Sancheong through a traditional water-refining process (Subi). Rather than relying on artificial decoration, Haeinyo allows the natural interplay of clay, fire, and light to reveal an effortless, enduring beauty.

"It always surprises people when they make the journey out here. To craft white porcelain entirely by hand — from refining the clay and shaping the form to glazing, firing, and finishing — space is essential. Each step demands its own dedicated place.

The true beauty of a vessel, however, is only completed when food is served upon it. I always craft each piece while imagining the dishes it will hold. On its own, a vessel might appear simple or understated, but those who bring it to their table come to appreciate its quiet strength. I love that shared moment — where my imagination in creating meets the imagination of the person serving."

— Kim Sang-in

Through this unhurried process, Haeinyo bridges heritage and daily living — creating enduring white porcelain designed to be lived with, touched, and cherished.
